North County Dems Present Youth Scholarships

The Democratic Club of North Santa Cruz County presented Miranda Aubry and Paris Shewfelt, both graduating seniors from SLV High School, with the Democratic Ideals Award for Outstanding Youth. The award recognizes students for civic mindedness, engagement and future civic aspirations. Aubry has worked to promote fairness and break down barriers between groups, as well as focusing on education about civic issues. Shewfelt has advocated for the environment and addressing the epidemic of gun violence.

Let’s Go Fishin’: New year brings fine steelhead fishing

The San Lorenzo River crested at 24 feet just before Christmas and now flows with ease through the valley. The river flows have been high, but the water color is clear and the flow is healthy. And the big rains of December brought large steelhead from Central to Northern California.

Holden Turner Spielvogel, son of Andrea Marley and Jonathan Robert Spielvogel of Scotts Valley, was born at 7 a.m. Nov. 11, 2012. He weighed 6 pounds, 2 ounces when he arrived at Dominican Hospital in Santa Cruz.
