While fishing in the Monterey Bay tends to be my main focus in this column, I have to give respect to the amazing marine mammals in the outer waters, as well.

The representation of women and girls in the media was the focus of a “dinner and a movie” fundraising event sponsored by the Scotts Valley Educational Foundation and the 1440 Foundation last week, raising money for a girl’s leadership club at Scotts Valley High School. The event, attended by approximately 200 people, was also aimed at raising awareness of how limited and sexist the portrayal of women and girls has generally been in the mainstream media. 

What’s one thing you can do to improve your health, reduce your impact on global warming, increase food security in your community, help the local economy and rediscover the pleasures of good eating? It’s simple: Eat locally grown or raised food.

These policies pay for part or all of the cost of nursing homes, assisted-living facilities and home health care for people who can no longer take care of themselves.

Passport Day in the Santa Cruz Wine Region is Saturday, Nov. 21, and it is an excellent time to go wine tasting. It only happens four times a year, and this will be the last chance to celebrate in 2009.
