Fresh off of a year of touring, the San Lorenzo Valley favorite sons in the Coffis Brothers & the Mountain Men band make their third annual appearance at Don Quixote's International Music Hall in Felton Friday and Saturday, Jan. 6 – 7.

It would have been in May of 1947 when Sister Claire, my French-born teacher passed a copy of the poem ‘In Flanders Fields’ to each of us in her classroom. “Memorize this, every word, jeunne femmes” (young ladies), she said in her lovely French accent, “and one day, hopefully, you will remember it and understand its true meaning.”

The other day I stopped by historic Gamble Gardens in Palo Alto. I had some free time before my eye appointment and Sherman, my dog, wanted to stretch his legs. You can mark time with the events in the botanical world and this garden is packed with good examples. School kids were tending the vegetable starts and beneficial-friendly flower beds. Volunteers were looking after the formal rose garden and tulip beds. Visitors like me and Sherman just wanted to take in all the early spring beauty.

Monterey Bay Salmon Trout Project hosted its annual fin-clip event early this month, and all the volunteers had a great time. In the meantime, as anglers wait for rains to bring steelhead, local fishing is centered on rockfish and crab.

“Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it. The river was cut by the world's great flood and runs over rocks from the basement of time. On some of the rocks are timeless raindrops. Under the rocks are the words, and some of the words are theirs. I am haunted by waters.”
