Remember when your parents advised you that buying a house was a good investment? For the second half of the 20th century, that was sound advice. But for the past six years, it’s been dead wrong.

Eight years ago, while working with a personal training client (let’s call her Hanna), I suggested she integrate some running into her fitness plan. In a hushed voice, with eyes downcast, Hanna confided that since having her second child, she could no longer run, because her bladder was too weak.

A stroke occurs when the blood supply to the brain is suddenly altered. This can occur when a clot in a blood vessel blocks blood flow to brain tissue, or when a burst blood vessel causes a part of the brain to drown in its own blood. These conditions cause brain cells to die or at least become damaged, which can cause temporary or permanent changes in body and mind function. Every year, 800,000 Americans have a stroke.
