Scotts Valley’s Judy Newman has been slipping and sliding on a clay court surface in town for the past several months as she prepares for the International Tennis Federation Senior World Championships.

Seems like just about everything is in bloom. Sure, there are many plants and trees whose season is still a ways off, but the flowers of early spring really get our attention.

Boasting a strong core and a seemingly endless source of young talent, the girls’ varsity basketball team at Scotts Valley High School is making it look easy as it runs wild over the competition in the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League.

The Junior Varsity baseball teams for Scotts Valley and San Lorenzo Valley took the field Tuesday as the Cougars defeated the Falcons 6-2. The victory puts the Cougars (7-1) in first place in league while the Falcons (6-2) remain in second place.

The San Lorenzo Valley Cougars and Scotts Valley Falcons opened the high school football season over the weekend with a taste of live action. The scrimmage — meaningless in the standings — was a warm-up for the first game of the season.

Five wrestlers from Scotts Valley and San Lorenzo Valley high schools won individual league titles during the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League finals at Santa Cruz High School on February 17. In the team competition, Aptos won the meet with 241 points, followed by Scotts Valley with 146 points. SLV took fourth with 122.5 points.
