Scotts Valley Middle School students are ready to bring the music, dancing and school spirit of Disney’s “High School Musical JR.” to the stage for three performances Nov. 6-7.

The 60-minute musical features 62 students in the cast and crew, working under the direction of Drama teacher Alexie Neall and Band teacher Alyssa Beltran. Based on the hit 2006 Disney Channel Original Movie, the production gives middle school performers the chance to bring the beloved story of East High to life.

“We are absolutely thrilled to bring this vibrant, high-energy show to our stage this season,” Neall said. “The level of talent, enthusiasm and commitment shown by these wonderful middle school students has been remarkable. They have put in countless hours of rehearsals and hard work to make this production truly come to life, and we cannot wait for our community to see the final result.”

The production features two casts, each bringing its own energy and interpretation to the story. In the main cast, eighth-grader Lila Rizzi returns to the stage as Gabriella, while newcomer Micah Stiles takes on the role of Troy Bolton. The understudy cast features eighth-grader Emma Guzman as Gabriella and younger cast member Liam Cellitti as Troy.

At the heart of “High School Musical JR.” is a familiar high school dilemma: Should students stick to the roles everyone expects them to play, or take a chance on something different?

When auditions are announced for East High’s annual spring musical, Troy, a popular basketball star, and Gabriella, a shy science whiz, decide to try out—a move that shakes up the school’s established social circles. As their classmates grapple with the unexpected auditions, the two must navigate the pressures of popularity, friendship and fitting in while pursuing their passion for performing.

The story’s upbeat message about finding the courage to be yourself is matched by a soundtrack packed with familiar favorites, including “Get’cha Head in the Game,” “Stick to the Status Quo” and the crowd-pleasing finale “We’re All in This Together.”

With its mix of music, humor, school rivalries and feel-good moments, the junior adaptation is designed for young performers while keeping the spirit of the original movie that made the Wildcats a household name. The production celebrates the value of stepping outside your comfort zone, accepting others and discovering what can happen when people work together.

Community members can catch the Wildcats in action at Scotts Valley Middle School at 7pm on Friday, Nov. 6, or at 2 and 7pm on Saturday, Nov. 7. Tickets are available online at cur8.com/25828/project/142361.
