Last week, Scotts Valley High School student-athletes and Breakers FC players Ryan Gomez, Nico Smith and Matteo Carbone participated in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy's Summer Showcase in Oceanside, where Development Academy soccer teams from around the nation met to compete in the Academy's signature event.
On June 18, the Scotts Valley Little League Rangers AAA team beat the Aptos Little League Red Sox AAA team 12-11 and, in turn, won the 2019 California District 39 Little League Minor Tournament of Champions (TOC).Â
Chris Anderson never envisioned watching the Central Coast Section Cross Country Championships from the sideline or missing the 2018 CIF State Meet. After all, the senior co-captain of San Lorenzo Valley’s Cross Country team was considered a favorite to reach the podium at both events this year. Likewise, Rishi Chandiramani, also a senior co-captain and inspirational leader of the Scotts Valley’s Boys team never imagined that he’d be watching his peers compete at CCS while he could only watch via FaceTime.

It’s a beautiful, sunny Tuesday in July, but rather than spending the day at the beach, the San Lorenzo Valley Varsity Football players are lifting weights in the high school gym. It is all part of their training regime. The student athletes are preparing to improve on their 5-5 finish from last season. And while the players have been working hard all summer, the preparation for a successful season goes beyond the weight room.Â
Next month, several participants will run the trails through Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park marking the 50th anniversary of Felton’s oldest long-distance race.
Sam Martin is not your average high school student. At 16, Martin, who grew up in Ben Lomond, has qualified for Loretta Lynn’s Amateur National Motocross Championship. After placing first in several amateur youth competitions, Martin, 16, received an invitation to the National Championship. Sam will participate in the 125cc and 250cc in his age group during the races from July 30 to August 4 in Hurricane Mills, Tennessee.
