Softball team takes home trophy
The SPIN 16-and-under softball team finished its summer season by taking home the first-place trophy from the Rebels Summer Classic tournament in Rohnert Park on Sunday, July 17.
The Santa Cruz County-based SPIN finished Saturday’s three pool-play games seeded sixth for Sunday’s elimination bracket.
On Sunday, the team defeated the Lakeport Scrappers, Ukiah LadyCats and finally Pacifica Fusion during the championship game. The games were played on the Sonoma State University softball field.
Kaitlyn Lotz hit .640 during the tournament and went 3-for-4 during the championship game. Adrianne Cope and Brooke Scothorn had outstanding pitching performances with two wins apiece.
The team consists of Cope, Lotz, Scothorn, Crystal Smeland, Michelle Hitt, Samantha Oesterle, Ashley Brumbaugh, Caitlyn Pellemeier, Erika Arriola, Racquel Mittlebusher, Emily Holmes, Julie Wingert, Kendall O’Conner and Gianna Meschi.
Valley volleyball camps in the works
Zoe and April Beltz will put on a volleyball camp at Scotts Valley and San Lorenzo Valley high schools for fifth-graders through high school seniors Aug. 8 through 12.
The camp will cover individual position training, serving, passing, blocking and hitting techniques, as well as fundamentals training. Players will be split into age and skill levels and will get collegiate-level instruction to improve their game.
The camp for high school players will be from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at Scotts Valley High, 360 Kings Village Road, and the camp for fifth- through eighth-graders will be from 3 to 5 p.m. at San Lorenzo Valley High, 7105 Highway 9, in Felton.
Cost is $100 per camper.

Free tennis clinic on tap in Boulder Creek
Tennis instructor Chris Bradley will host a free clinic featuring local tennis teaching professionals Sunday, July 24, at Boulder Creek Golf and Country Club.
The first session runs from 3 to 4:15 p.m. for ages 4 through 13. The second session, from 4:15 to 5:45 p.m., is for those age 14 and older.
The clinic is available to all, and participants can borrow Wilson racquets for the day. The clinic is part of the United States Professional Tennis Association’s Tennis Across America program.
Bradley is a USPTA professional instructor who has coached since 1975.
