Local tennis pro to play in international championship
Judy Newman, the tennis director at La Madrona Swim & Racquet Club in Scotts Valley, will represent the United States at the 32nd International Tennis Foundation Seniors World Team Championships.
The nation’s top tennis players in age groups 35-plus to 55-plus will compete against teams from 35 countries from Feb. 6 through 11. The championship will be held at seven different sites in the San Diego area and more than 1,000 athletes are expected to participate.
Newman has won many championships including the 2010 USPTA International 45 singles and doubles titles. Formerly Newman was ranked professionally. From 1985 through 1990 she was ranked in the top 250 in the Women’s Tennis Association in singles and doubles.
She is currently the national No. 3 singles and doubles player in the 45-plus category. She and her son Cody are ranked No. 5 in the nation in mother-son competition and her daughter is on the high school tennis team. Newman also coaches tennis at Scotts Valley High School.
Derby girl tickets go on sale
Tickets are on sale now for the first bout of the 2012 Santa Cruz Derby Girls season, which will be held Feb.18th at the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium.
Season tickets are also on sale at the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium ticket box office at 307 Church Street in Santa Cruz for $184 for the 8-game home season.

Scotts Valley alumni raising funds for under privileged girls
Erica Soma, a 2007 Scotts Valley High School graduate is working to raise $4,000 for G-Row Boston, a rowing team that provides mentoring and coaching for under-privileged girls in the Boston area.
Soma, who is studying for a master’s degree in exercise science and public health at Northeastern University in Boston, Mass., has pledged to run the Boston Marathon as part of her fundraising effort.
She was a varsity volleyball player at Scotts Valley High and rowed for Los Gatos Rowing Club before attending Willamette University. She rowed for three years at Willamette including taking her team to the National Championships in 2009.
Now she runs marathons – she has completed four half marathons and three full marathons.
