Amidst an average season, the San Lorenzo Valley High School basketball team defeated rival Scotts Valley High School 71-58 in front of a packed home crowd in Felton on January 30.
The Cougars, now 2-7 in Santa Cruz Coast Athletic play and 6-15 overall, avenged a loss to the Falcons earlier this season behind double-digit scoring nights from four players.
Junior Billy Mullins led the scoring for the Cougars with 16 points. Erik Lange and Aiden Brown both scored 15 for SLV and teammate Trevor Patterson added 13.
Jack Pasquini dumped in a game high 25 points in the fast-paced battle.
“We just need to score some points and make some baskets,” Cougar Head Coach Marcus Northcutt said before the game. “We have all the tools we need but we have to come together as a team and score to win.”
Scoring points is what they did. For the first time in league play, the Cougars scored more than 70 points, a feat they hadn’t done since their last pre-season game against Santa Clara High on Dec. 27.
The Cougars avenged a 62-43 loss to the Falcons on Jan. 11 and may have dashed the Falcons hopes for their first .500 season.
Scotts Valley, (4-5 SCCAL and 11-10 overall) needs to win two of their final three games to notch the first .500 league play mark and finish the season with the schools first winning record.
The Falcons play St. Francis on Wednesday after press time and then at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 3 when they host Soquel with the hopes to avenge an earlier loss.
San Lorenzo Valley plays Aptos High after press time, and again at 7 p.m. on Friday Feb. 3 against the Santa Cruz Cardinals at home in Felton.
