Bonny Doon resident to lead art center
Rachel Anne Goodman of Bonny is the new executive director of the Tannery Arts Center in Santa Cruz, announced this week.
Goodman will lead the nonprofit center and raise money for the third phase of the Tannery Arts Center, which will include a 200-seat performing arts theater. The previous phases include a live-work environment for county artists with housing and studio space.
Goodman, a Bonny Doon resident since 1994, previously worked as Assemblyman Bill Monning’s district director and press secretary in Santa Cruz. She has also been an adjunct professor at Cabrillo College and a Peabody Award-winning radio journalist. She served as development director at a large nonprofit arts and media center in Kentucky, called Appalshop.
Outgoing Director George Newell, a former chief operating officer in Santa Clara County, will take up a role as board treasurer.
Middle school musicians honored
Choir and band students from Scotts Valley and San Lorenzo Valley middle schools will join students from around the Central Coast to participate in the CCS CMEA Honor Choir and Band Concert.
Middle school students sent in audition tapes in November and were selected to participate in the concert based on their skills. Students from San Lorenzo Valley and Scotts Valley middle schools were among those selected.
Participants from SLV Middle School are Quinn Becker and Cameron Gale in honor choir and Conner Castleman and Megan Peck in band.
From Scotts Valley Middle School, Edward Sims-Johnson, Anna Schroeck and Alicia Snyder will sing as part of the honor choir.
The concert will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 4, at Pacific Grove Middle School, 835 Forest Ave., in Pacific Grove.
SV student earns dean’s list recognition
Scotts Valley resident Emma Rotella earned a place on the dean’s list at The College of New Jersey for the fall semester. Rotella carried 12 or more credits and had a 3.5 or better GPA.
Boulder Creek student honored
Christopher Johnson of Boulder Creek graduated summa cum laude in fall 2011 with a Bachelor of Science degree in aircraft systems from LeTourneau University in Longview, Texas.
Wylie elected association president
San Lorenzo Valley Unified School District Trustee George Wylie was elected president of the Santa Cruz County School Boards Association at its Jan. 19 meeting.
Wylie replaces Judy McGooden, who led the association as president for the past two years and is a trustee for the Soquel Union Elementary School District.
Wylie said he plans to continue the association’s work of building partnerships among all school districts in Santa Cruz County to support educational excellence. He is also running for 5th District Santa Cruz County Supervisor.
SLV alumnus earns award
Michael Warfield, a 1994 San Lorenzo Valley High School graduate, was awarded a Meritorious Honor Award for his work as a General Services Officer with the U.S. State Department.
Warfield is stationed in Bankok, Thailand, with his wife, Corina, who is a project manager with USAID also stationed in Thailand.
After graduating from Santa Clara University with a degree in commerce, Warfield began working with business consulting firm Accenture, where he was promoted to manager. In 2008, he left the company and took a position with the state department.
