Snow falls on Bonny Doon
A late-winter storm brought several inches of snow to Bonny Doon last weekend.
While rain fell on Scotts Valley and the San Lorenzo Valley, snow fell and stuck in Bonny Doon on Saturday, March 17, and Sunday, March 18.
It was the first measureable snowfall in Bonny Doon this winter, which could help the county as it endures a year of lighter-than-usual rainfall.
California Department of Forestry records showed that 41.29 inches of rain had fallen in Bonny Doon as of Wednesday this week, compared with nearly 59 inches at the same time last year.
In Felton, Cal Fire reported 27.47 inches, compared with 44.97 inches at this time last year.
On average, between 55 and 60 inches fall in the San Lorenzo Valley each year.
Call for artists
Organizers of the 10th annual Bonny Doon Art & Wine Festival seek artists to participate in the popular event.
The festival will be from 1 to 6 p.m. June 23, a Saturday, at a new venue, Vigne Farms Equestrian Park, 3675 Bonny Doon Road.

Hammer receives new union endorsements
Eric Hammer, a candidate for 5th District supervisor in Santa Cruz County, recently gained several endorsements from local labor groups.
Hammer received backing from the Monterey Bay Central Labor Council, Service Employees International Union and United Transportation Union.
“I’m genuinely honored to have earned the support of the people who care for our sick and elderly, clean our hotels and offices, and drive our public transit and school buses,” Hammer said in a prepared statement. “They get up every day and work hard, and I’m committed to doing everything I can to be supportive.”

Weber pulls out of supervisor race
Ben Lomond resident Susan Weber announced this week that she had withdrawn from the race for 5th District Santa Cruz County supervisor.
“It was just disappointing,” Weber said. “I couldn’t raise any money.”
Weber, a former San Lorenzo Valley Unified School District trustee, said she withdrew her candidate statement this week, but her name will be on the ballot in June, because the deadline has passed to be removed for the primary election.
Three candidates remain in the race, Eric Hammer, Bill Smallman and Bruce McPherson.
Bowlers sought for teen-mentoring fundraiser
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Santa Cruz County seeks participants for its annual bowl-athon, “Bowl for Kids’ Sake,” on April 28 and 29 at the Boardwalk Bowl in Santa Cruz.
Last year’s event helped raise more than $103,000 for local youth mentoring.
All proceeds help create and support matches between caring mentors and at-risk young people in the local community.
