Torch passes throughScottsValley
Law enforcement officers fromScottsValleyran one leg of the Special Olympics Northern California “Flame of Hope” torch run on June 13 to kick off the Special Olympics, which run Friday to Sunday, June 22 to 24.
The torch started inWatsonvilleon June 13 before making its way toSanta CruzandScottsValley, where officers took the torch at the Hilton Hotel. Escorted by police, the bearers made their way to the fire station onGlenwood Drive.
The flame’s journey will travel hundreds of miles through 21Californiacounties before arriving atUniversityofCalifornia,Davis, the location of this year’s Special Olympics.
More than 500 law enforcement personnel will take part in the torch run, and 700 Special Olympians will take part in the games.
Pizza event raises $900 for cause
Boulder Creek-based Team Sjogrens raised $900 in an event at Boulder Creek Pizza and Pub on June 3 to benefit a Boulder Creek resident who suffers from an immune system disease.
The team consists of 47 members who will run in the Wharf to Wharf race on July 22 in honor of Estrella Bibbey. Bibbey suffers from Sjogren’s Disease, a chronic ailment in which the body’s immune system attacks its own moisture-producing glands.
Boulder Creek Pizza and Pub owner Justin Acton agreed to donate 20 percent of his proceeds that day to the cause, prompting team and community members to pack the downtown Boulder Creek restaurant.
The group, founded by Bibbey in 2010, aims to raise $30,000 this year for Sjogren’s research.
