Arthur Raymond Miser

A private service will be held at sea for Felton resident Arthur Raymond Miser, who died July 12. He was 88.
Mr. Miser was born to Virgil and Doris Miser inSan Franciscoon Nov. 22, 1923.
He served in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II as an aircraft mechanic and gunner. In 1945, he settled inSan Josewhere he met his wife of 66 years, Joyce.
He graduated fromSanta ClaraUniversityin 1950 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Mr. Miser worked for thecountyofSanta Claraand retired as a senior traffic engineer in 1984. During that time, he headed the first underwater search-and-rescue team for the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office.
In 1960, he was certified an NAUI instructor during the first course inHouston,Texas.
He had an active career as a dive master and instructor for many years. His love for the ocean kept him exploring. He and lifelong friend Norm Crowell founded and named the Wild Hook at Pleasure Point in 1941 that became one ofSanta Cruz’s first surf spots. Mr. Miser continued his passion with years of fishing and diving out of theSanta CruzandMontereyharbors aboard his boat “Callisto.”
He is survived by his wife, Joyce Miser; children, Linda Charpenteir and husband Bob of Rhode Island, Eric Miser and wife JoAnn of San Jose, Karen Black and husband Russ of Felton, Brian Miser and Scott Miser and wife Jamie, all ofSanta Cruz, and Diane Radbruch ofOregon, whom he loved like a daughter; 13 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Lisa Miser.
