Harpin' Jonny

Ben Lomond harmonica player Harpin’ Jonny Troutner will release his second CD, “Harpster,” during a release party in Felton next weekend.
The release party will feature bands that Troutner has been part of over the years, including The Primadons, The Groovehounds, Larry Hosford Band and Harpin’ & Clark.
“All (the bands) play on tracks on the CD,” Troutner said. “Each band will do a set.”
Troutner, the former owner of a landscape supply company, entered the professional music scene since 1992 and released his first CD, “Harpin’ Around,” in 2000.
Now 54, he has been playing the harmonica since he was 10 years old, and the new CD has everything from bluegrass to country, rock and blues tunes.
“It really takes patience,” Troutner said. “You have to learn to play it like a real instrument.”
He focuses on blues harp and chromatic harp, but he can easily make music with any harmonica.
“I can play all different styles with it, and it’s interesting,” he said.
Troutner is often called on by local bands to play harmonica for them. He has worked with Lacy J. Dalton, among others, and estimates he’s performed on 20 or 30 different albums.
His new album, “Harpster,” was recorded by Ken Kraft and engineered by Vince Sanchez. It will be sold at the door and later on iTunes and via Troutner’s website.
