Local to attend hoops academy
Josh Mooney, a former Scotts Valley High and Monte Vista Christian High athlete, will attend La Jolla Preparatory Basketball Academy in La Jolla.
The program allows for an extra year of high school basketball eligibility to prepare players to compete in high-level college basketball programs.
Mooney, who starred in football and basketball in high school, will travel around the country and play 47 games during the season against teams from Oak Hill Academy and other elite programs.
He is the son of Monte Vista Christian basketball coach Dan Mooney.
Kicker makes Cal debut
Scotts Valley High graduate Noah Beito, an all-league place kicker, kicked off at the NCAA Division I level for the first time during University of California, Berkeley’s 50-31 win against Southern Utah. His kickoff went 64 yards to the Utah 1-yard line and was returned for 16 yards to the 17-yard line.
Beito is a Cal freshman this fall, and the game was his second in uniform and his first kicking opportunity.
He hopes to travel to Columbus, Ohio, this weekend for the Golden Bears’ matchup with Ohio State. The game will be televised nationally on ABC at 9 a.m. PDT Saturday, Sept. 15.
Beito is a 2012 Scotts Valley High graduate and the son of Bob Beito and Esther Yang.
