Cougars enter league 3-1; Falcons host Bear River

San Lorenzo Valley High enters Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League play this weekend with a 3-1 record after holding off Watsonville High for a 28-20 road win Friday, Sept. 21.
The Cougars will host Harbor High School at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, in both teams’ league opener.
Against Watsonville, SLV tallied 229 yards on the ground and quarterback Isaac Newberry tossed two touchdowns and ran for third in a hotly fought battle.
The visiting Cougars opened the scoring in the first quarter when Jason Bryson took a handoff 31 yards for the touchdown. The Cougars scored again in the second quarter and took a 14-0 lead on a 10-yard pass from Newberry to Lucas Sinnott. Watsonville punched in a touchdown midway through the quarter to make the score 14-7 at halftime.
The seesaw battle continued in the second half when the Wildcats tied the game on an 8-yard scoring pass from Chris Picazo to Michael Barcelo.
The Cougars bounced back and took the lead on a 10-yard scoring pass from Newberry to Robbie Biaggioti with about three minutes left in the quarter.
But Watsonville responded quickly when Isaac Lopez caught a short pass from Picazo and raced 83 yards for the touchdown. The Wildcats missed the extra point, making the score 21-20 SLV.
In the fourth quarter, Newberry capped a six-play drive with a 1-yard touchdown plunge to put the game on ice.
Newberry finished the game 6-10 for 43 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. On the ground, Bryson finished with six carries for 72 yards and a score and Kjell Johnson had eight carries for 48 yards.
The Cougars begin into league play on a two-game winning streak.
 
Scotts Valley
Scotts Valley High will host Bear River High from Grass Valley at 2 p.m. Saturday.
The Bear River Bruins enter the game 4-0, having scored at least 28 points in each victory. Their hard-hitting rushing attack features four running backs who regularly share carries and an opportunistic quarterback.
Scotts Valley is 1-2 on the season, with two losses on the road against strong opponents. The Falcons are coming off a bye week following a 14-6 loss to Le Grande High on Sept. 14.
