Cougars drill Santa Cruz, Falcons fall to Knights

Derek Poetzinger and Jason Bryson each ran for more than 90 yards and two touchdowns to lead San Lorenzo Valley High School over hapless Santa Cruz High School on Friday, Oct. 5.
Poetzinger opened the scoring in the first quarter for the Cougars (5-1) with a 3-yard scoring run. Bryson followed with a 3-yard scoring run later in the quarter.
In the second quarter, Duncan Mackie caught a 50-yard catch-and-run touchdown from quarterback Isaac Newberry to make the score 20-0. Ben Knudson drilled a 32-yard field goal to give SLV a 23-0 lead at halftime.
In the third quarter Poetzinger rushed for a 5-yard touchdown and Bryson raced in for a 71-yard score to cap the scoring.
Poetzinger finished with 99 yards on 16 carries while Bryson recorded 92 yards on six carries. Newberry went 9-for-12 for 171 yards and a touchdown. Sid Chi led the receivers with three catches for 60 yards.
The Cougar defense allowed Santa Cruz only 55 yards of total offense in the dominating performance.
The Cougars improved to 5-1 on the season and will host St. Francis at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20.
 
Scotts Valley
The Falcons travel to Aptos High School on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. with a 1-4 record including 0-1 in league, after falling to a tough Soquel High team 33-26 on October 6 in a back-and-forth game.
Soquel, 5-1 on the season, is a favorite for the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League title and Aptos, 4-2, is no slouch.
Against the Knights, Scotts Valley opened up a 10-0 lead on a Jack Lavery field goal from 42 yards and a 14-yard scoring pass from Garrett Johnston to Jake Rehnberg. Rehnberg later scored twice more, on a three-yard run and two-yard run and finished the day with 15 carries for 75 yards. His teammate, Ari Wargon, also had a big day. Wargon rushed for 249 yards on 29 carries, but did not get into the end zone.
The Knights stormed back in the second quarter, as running back Fabiano Hale scored two short touchdown runs. In the third Hale scored a third touchdown, sandwiched between Rehnberg’s scores and Scotts Valley led 23-20 into the fourth.
After a Soquel touchdown, Lavery tied the game at 26 with a 32-yard field goal. Soquel scored the winning touchdown on a 3-yard touchdown pass from Lucas Cardoza to Trestan Peacock.
