Chili cook-off returns for second year

The second annual SLV Chili Cook-Off will take place October 12 at Boulder Creek Recreation and Park District.
San Lorenzo Valley residents Andrea Wilke and Meghan Dunn return to organize the event.
“It went really, really well last year,” Dunn said. “At the end, everyone came up and asked if we were doing it again next year.”
Last year the cook-off benefited the struggling Glen Arbor Preschool which wound up closing. This time around, organizers have chosen to benefit Boulder Creek Recreation and South Street Centre to help support the amped up summer and after-school programming, Dunn said.
The cook-off is not a sanctioned event, but the rules are loosely based on sanctioned chili-cook-off rules, Dunn said. A maximum of 18 participants will compete and sign-ups are on a first-come, first-served basis.
First place will receive a to-be-determined cash prize, and trophies will be awarded to the People’s Choice, first, second, third and Most Tasted chili’s. Dunn and Wilke have likely decided to forgo the Hottest Chili category this year.
Dunn and Wilke said there will be live music all day long, both for the cooks in the morning and attendees in the afternoon. The duo is still looking for bands to perform during the cook-off.  
Contestants will begin cooking at 8 a.m. and the tasting event for the public will take place from 2 to 5 p.m. A tasting kit that includes four tastings is $5. Tickets will be on sale at the event. Boulder Creek Rec Hall is located at 13333 Middleton Ave. in Boulder Creek.
