Sales tax measure to be decided

City of Scotts Valley residents will head to the polls on Tuesday, Nov. 5 to decide the fate of Measure U, an 8-year ½-cent sales tax measure asked for by the city council.
The tax, which has faced little opposition, would raise approximately $1.2 million per year for the city’s general fund, to help pay for a deficit imposed on the city partially due to the closure of redevelopment agencies last year.
The measure, which was unanimously approved by the council after two days of deliberation in August, would increase Scotts Valley’s sales tax to 8.75 percent for the next eight years.

Polling places will be open in Scotts Valley from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Voters may drop mail-in ballots off at the polls, or vote in person anytime during the open hours.
The only other special election taking place in the county Tuesday is a parcel tax in the Loma Prieta Joint Union School District.
