A week’s worth of homecoming activities will conclude in San Lorenzo Valley High’s final preseason football game Saturday, Sept. 26, against Watsonville High.
The game will start at 2 p.m., with the homecoming king and queen announced after the game.
Watsonville (2-1) goes into the matchup riding a two-game winning streak, including a 43-23 victory over Aptos High last weekend.
The Wildcats are led by running back Tony Mora and quarterback Jerry Alvarez, who have combined for seven touchdowns on the ground. Alvarez has also thrown six touchdowns to go along with three interceptions.
The Cougars head into the game fresh off a 21-21 tie with Andrew Hill High School in San Jose.
In that game, Kyle Todd scored three touchdowns in the first half, but the Cougars were shut out in the second as their opponent posted two scores and left with the tie after a late personal foul penalty knocked the Cougars out of field goal range.
“Their kids didn’t quit,” coach Doug Morris said. “They scored two touchdowns in the second half, and that was the story of the night.”
Morris was pleased with the play of the offensive line and Todd’s performance in the backfield.
“Kyle Todd, he was the man of the hour out there all night long,” the coach said. “The kid plays his heart out.”
Todd scored on runs of 4 yards, 35 yards and 5 yards to finish with 193 yards on the ground.
For a second straight week, the Cougars played against a team with speed. Alisal had fast running backs two weeks ago, and Andrew Hill’s Ronnie Isles rushed for 127 yards on 14 carries, including the game-tying touchdown and two-point conversion with 7:04 left in the fourth quarter.
Teams in the Central Coast Section do not play overtime in the preseason.
