Scotts Valley community plans fundraiser to support injured teacher
Scotts Valley High School and GateWay Bible Church are teaming up on a fundraiser to support the recovery of science teacher Naomi Lyall, who experienced a traumatic brain injury in January while chaperoning Scotts Valley teens on a snowboarding weekend.
Lyall, known as “Nay” to family and friends, was named as Scotts Valley High’s teacher of the year in 2005, is undergoing intense physical therapy with her family in southern California.
To raise money to assist her with expenses she has and will incur, friends have planned “Nay Day,” a family-friendly event that will feature a pancake breakfast, silent auction, bounce houses, face painting, games, a cake walk, and music, as well as a physics booth and garden booth.
The event will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 31, at Gateway Bible Church, located at 5000 Granite Creek Road in Scotts Valley.
Breakfast tickets cost $8 for adults, and $5 children 12 and under.
Tickets can be purchased in advance at gatewaybible.org or on the day of the event.

Boulder Creek radio station seeks computer donations
Organizers of 90.1 KBCZ, Boulder Creek’s new, nonprofit radio station, are seeking 1 to 2 computers to get the broadcast’s online streaming going.
According to a news release, one will be used for streaming while the other will be used for production and back up.
The organizers said they need computers with the following specs:
– 3 gigahertz processor
– 2-plus GB of RAM
– Any size hard drive

Absentee ballot request deadline is Tuesday
The Santa Cruz County Elections Department recently announced that the deadline to apply for a vote-by-mail ballot for the Tuesday, June 3 primary election is set for Tuesday, May 27.
To request a vote-by-mail ballot, voters may complete an application that can be found on the back cover of the county’s Sample Ballot and Voter’s Information Pamphlet that has been mailed to voters.
Voters may also complete and submit an application online at www.votescount.com or call 454-2060.
Vote-by-mail ballot applications are also available at the City Clerk’s Office in Scotts Valley.
