Former SJPD Assistant Chief Walter Adkins, now 81, and retired Sgt. Phil Crawford, 80, both made remarkable showings in the Masters 80-plus age, 242-plus pound division.
The competition took place at a local gym in Scotts Valley, attracting powerlifters from across the country. Adkins secured second place in the single lift bench press, while Crawford dazzled the crowd by winning gold medals in eight events, including the full power squat, bench press, push pull and squat deadlift.
Crawford also set an impressive seven USPC national records in his division and is now ranked second worldwide across all powerlifting federations for the bench press in the 80-plus age group.
Both men have long histories of athletic achievement. In their police careers during the 1970s, they were car partners and earned numerous medals at the State and National Police Olympics. Adkins was a decathlon champion, while Crawford claimed the title at the World Police Arm Wrestling Championship and secured six years of police Olympic powerlifting gold medals.
The duo has maintained a close training partnership for over 55 years, exemplifying dedication and resilience well into their senior years. Their performances at the Scotts Valley competition continue to inspire many.
