San Lorenzo Valley High junior Brayden Scoma recorded a pair of rushing touchdowns, and the Cougars blanked Greenfield, 20-0, in non-league play Sept. 27.

Scoma entered the game in the second quarter and immediately made an impact after he scored a six-yard touchdown. He added another rushing TD from 14 yards out in the fourth quarter to cap off the scoring, and afternoon Homecoming festivities.

“We had a great crowd,” said SLV head coach David Grant. “I know our guys were really excited to play at home and get the shoutout. Getting a win definitely felt good.”

Teammate senior Justin Griffis added an eight-yard rushing TD before he and sophomore Jesse Fulkerson each were temporarily sidelined with injuries.

“I felt we needed to change a little bit on offense to keep Greenfield on their toes,” Grant said. “We had [Scoma] at quarterback, and then we had Jacob Hardin, who just started playing fullback for use this year…I think it was a good look for us.”

It was the first home game and shutout of the season for SLV, which bounced back after a 34-6 loss to Stevenson on Sept. 20.

“I think coming off the loss to Stevenson, everybody was pretty hungry to get a win,” Grant said. “I felt our defense really stepped up, our defensive line, our linebackers really just came through, closed down inside gaps, tackling low.”

Next up, SLV (3-1) plays at Soledad (0-4) on Thursday at 7:30pm.

“We know [Soledad’s] big, they got athletes,” Grant said. “We know they’re hungry for a win.”

The Cougars will begin Pacific Coast Athletic League Mission-North Division play against Scotts Valley (4-0) on Oct. 11 at Harbor High School. Kickoff is slated for 7:30pm.

SV’s Decleve wins back-to-back races: Scotts Valley senior Ava Decleve added another pair of wins last week, starting with the girls’ 2.59-mile race in the Falcons’ league dual meet against Santa Cruz on Sept. 25.

The UCLA commit captured the race in 15 minutes, 06 seconds, slightly ahead of teammate junior Hanna Shehorn (15:16) in second and Santa Cruz sophomore Isla Roake (15:21) in third.

“[Decleve’s] real strong, running with confidence,” Scotts Valley head coach Todd Hoffman said. “And then you have Hanna [Shehorn], she gets in that race and she’s not afraid. She’s really pushing herself and she wants to be closer to Ava.”

Santa Cruz freshman Julie Kassel (15:54) placed fourth, while Scotts Valley seniors Dylan Turzak (17:46) and Jennifer Brownfield (17:46) took fifth and sixth, respectively.
