Travelers on Highway 9 near Boulder Creek will face a full overnight closure Monday, Aug. 24, as crews continue work on the Kings Creek Bridge replacement.

Caltrans said the highway will be closed from 8 p.m. Monday to 6 a.m. Tuesday at Kings Creek Bridge, between Pool Drive and Primavera/Old County Highway. Crews will place 100-foot-long precast concrete girders for the southbound portion of the new bridge.

The closure and work were originally scheduled for late July.

Following the girder placement, work at Kings Creek Bridge will continue around the clock until the bridge deck is poured. That work is expected to be completed by Saturday, Aug. 29.

A detour will be available via Highway 17. Caltrans said message and directional signs will alert travelers to traffic controls, and motorists should allow extra time for travel. Residents in the area also should expect overnight construction noise.

Temporary signals currently in place will return to 24/7 signalized one-way traffic control the morning of Aug. 25.

The work is part of the Highway 9 San Lorenzo River and Kings Creek Bridge Replacement Project, which involves replacing both bridges north of Boulder Creek to improve safety for travelers. Crews are in the first phase of the project, which includes closing the southbound lane while the southbound portions of the bridges are replaced.

The Kings Creek Bridge replacement is located between post miles 15.41 and 15.55, while the San Lorenzo River Bridge replacement is between post miles 13.58 and 13.69.

Caltrans said the Aug. 24 closure is one of several full overnight closures planned as part of the two bridge replacement projects. Additional updates will be provided as the work progresses.
