Your Health: Highlights from 2013
As we prepare to begin a new year, I’d like to share with you some highlights from my columns this past year.
The Mountain Gardener: How to properly plant bare root trees
Growing fruit in your garden or home orchard may be even more important in the future than ever before. The lack of rainfall last year and this winter will probably raise the price of fruit at the market. If the water farmers rely on is rationed during this years growing season, fruit production will also suffer. You can start growing your own fruit by planting a bare root tree now. This is how to do it.
Guest Column: Fitting in
In the mid-1990s, after many years in the states of Colorado and California, I returned to my home state of Washington hoping to find a job. Eventually I did, and I was asked to attend a day-long orientation for clergy newly arrived in the Diocese of Olympia (western Washington). The session was to help people become acquainted not only with the diocese, but also with the region. For that portion, I sat quietly and observed the comments of people who had lived elsewhere all their lives.
Nature Friendly: Walk on the wild side with pumas
It was a few minutes before midnight when I pulled onto my property in the Santa Cruz Mountains. There, captured in the bright car lights, was an adult, un-collared mountain lion looking up into a madrone tree. As I stopped, the cat turned and walked deliberatively back into the thick forest.
Healthy living: How to avoid the Jingle Bell jiggle
We’ve entered the time of year when cookies, candy and other temptations seem to lurk around every corner. While it is important to partake in the merriment of seasonal treats, you won’t want to begin the New Year scavenging the sale racks for a bigger pant size.
Gardener: Winter is time to choose bare-root trees
Every year about this time, I get excited about what fruit trees I'm going to recommend for those who want to start a home orchard or add to their edible gardens. Will this be the year you get a Cox's Orange Pippin apple or an American Golden Russet? Maybe an oldie but goodie like a Golden Delicious apple will become the treasure of your family. But, then again, there's the Mutsu, a favorite of connoisseurs, which might get the nod.
Sustainable living: ‘Re-Skilling’ for an uncertain tomorrow
Many of us know how to set up a home wireless network, assemble a children’s bicycle, scour the web for cheap air fares, and perform other tasks that define contemporary life for many Americans.
