In Conversation with Mayor Jim Reed

Last week Scotts Valley Mayor Jim Reed sat down for an interview with the Press Banner to discuss some important issues he hopes to address in his third mayoral term. There is no question for Reed a key economic driver for the city will be the addition of new hotels. According to Reed’s estimates, one hotel can generate enough transient occupancy tax revenue equivalent to what 1,823 single family homes or 10 grocery stores would generate.

What to grow in the winter

I had to wait a couple years for my variegated winter daphne to settle in before setting flowers but this year it’s making up for lost time. There’s something special about a plant that will bloom in the depth of winter, hold up to rain and scent the garden all at the same time. With beautiful rosy-pink flower clusters and attractive yellow-margined variegated foliage, daphne make a great foundation plant for dappled shade gardens. They are deer resistant and have low water requirements during the summer. What’s not to love?

Chocolate Avocado Mousse

The gift of chocolate is often considered one of love and affection. Wrapping the true decadence of chocolate in a bundle of heart-healthy ingredients with the special touch of something homemade, makes it a gift to be savored.

Opioids, a nationwide problem

There's been a lot of news recently about the opioid addiction. The use and abuse of opioids has skyrocketed in recent years and has become a nationwide problem. The most common opioids are Vicodin (hydrocodone), OxyContin (oxycodone), Dilaudid (hydromorphone) and Demerol (Meperidine).

Get trees now, before they blossom

It’s been a weird winter, weather-wise, but aren’t they all one way or another? My flowering plum is blooming weeks early. I have an Autumnalis flowering cherry tree that blooms several times a year. The last blooming cycle started in late November and it’s still blooming now. This tree came into my life 20 years ago as a bare root tree. We’re old friends. Now is the time to add ornamentals and edibles like fruit, nuts, berries and vegetables while they’re available in bare root form. They are easy to plant, economical and establish quickly.
