Falcons tie Harbor, remained undefeated in SCCAL

Despite a scoreless tie with Harbor High School, the Scotts Valley High School girls soccer team was not satisfied with their effort or the final result on Tuesday, Jan. 28.

Center on a Hill: SLVHS Aquaponics

On a blue-sky day, I walked up the western slope of the San Lorenzo Valley High School campus, almost to the edge of Fall Creek State Park, to the Aquaponics Program.  Over the hubbub of harvesting, water tanks, chatter, and Stevie Wonder, Mr. Meyer’s voice echoed around the facility, “Okay, guys! Get to your stations.” As I took a passionate and student-led tour of the greenhouse and classroom, I couldn’t help but wonder where this program was when I was in high school.

May your rivers flow without end ... down into a desert of red rock ... where something strange and more beautiful and more full of wonder than your deepest dreams waits for you.” — Edward Abbey

Let’s Go Fishin’: Low water stress

As much as I wish creating rain is under my control, I have to remind myself it is out of my hands. The wonderful weather comes with pleasure until my mind switches from the beach to the river, then I begin to realize a slow underlining feeling of worry and fear. I think this concern is carried by many of us who have concerns that are greater than ourselves and the daily pleasure of nice weather. So many factors relay on regular rain and snow fall totals. It is hard to not wish for rain.

Let’s Go Fishin’: Giant squid are a no-show

The past few years, fishing for giant squid has become something we expect in the fall and winter months.
