Valley Politics: Will They Just Watch it Burn?
Among the few things that we truly fear in the San Lorenzo Valley are mountain lions, flooding, earth quakes, and fires. When a state entity institutes a program to help combat one of them, it should make sense that it would be whole-heartedly embraced. However, that has not been the case for Cal Fire’s Fire Prevention “Fee” that was first levied upon Valley home-owners in 2012. Come October 10th we will be paying our second round of fees.

Man’s Best Friend
Dogs are amazing. They can do incredible things. Well maybe not my dog, Sherman, who is more likely to get into mischief than save mankind but we’ve all heard stories about detection dogs sniffing out drugs, explosives, cadavers and disaster survivors. In the mid 90’s, handlers started training them for conservation tasks such as sniffing out scat from endangered species and detecting trafficked ivory. Now their olfactory prowess is being used in the fight against invasive plants and insects. And this year dogs are being trained to sniff out Covid 19 odor with 82% accuracy. The list of how man’s best friend is helping us just keeps getting longer.

From Dusk to Dawn Protecting Scotts Valley
When word of the CZU fire came around, it was all hands on deck. The term “mutual aid” doesn't begin to capture the depths of what that actually entails. The night our 12 officer force had to evacuate 11,000 residents out of Scotts Valley wouldn't have been remotely possible without the assistance of hundreds of officers from around the Bay Area.
