Scotts Valley is a wonderful town. There are so many reasons why all of us live here and I’m certain that safety is on everyone’s list. Unfortunately, our great police department is challenged with higher wages offered elsewhere that makes it difficult for them to retain good talent right here. Plus, it’s difficult for an officer to afford to live here. We need to come up with several solutions to remedy what the city council calls a budget crisis.

Summer weather is finally here, and I find myself thinking of ways to stay cool. We know there is a cooling effect under the canopy of our forest trees. Extremes in air and soil temperatures are lessened. But any combination of perennials, shrubs and trees will help keep your garden cool, while also providing habitat for wildlife, decreasing energy use, absorbing carbon dioxide and supplying fresh oxygen.

Spotlight: Matt Miller
Former Scotts Valley High School wide receiver Matt Miller is heading into his senior season at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah. The 2007 Falcon alumnus hopes to help his team return to the NCAA division 1-AA football playoffs again this season. Weber State made the playoffs for three years in a row before going 6-5 last season and missing the playoffs by one game.
