EDITOR,
On Page 3 of the Press-Banner dated May 13, 2011, the story by Peter Burke, “Valley residents worried by political signs,” accompanied by a photo of a sidewalk table, explained that some residents felt that the materials displayed were offensive.
How is it that they feel so? Our country’s Constitution states that we can peaceably assemble (Bill of Rights, Article 1). This exists for all sides of politics. Freedom is not free.
It takes a lot of restraint to allow others to express their points of view when they are very opposed by our own beliefs. We should all be able to express our points of view. Laws were established to maintain this.
When violence or property damage is associated with expressing these views, then and only then should action be taken against them. This was a legal way of distributing information by a legally registered group that was formed to promote their political views.
People don’t have to agree with the views, but they shouldn’t complain about others’ rights to express them.
