One of the San Lorenzo Valley’s most beloved traditions returns on Saturday, July 4, as the Boulder Creek Business Association (BCBA) hosts its annual Fourth of July Parade through downtown Boulder Creek.
The community celebration, which draws residents and visitors from across Santa Cruz County, will take place from 10 a.m. to noon along Highway 9 in the heart of town. Organizers encourage spectators to arrive early to secure parking and find a prime viewing spot along the parade route.
This year’s parade will honor longtime physician, Dr. Kenneth Reed, as grand marshal, recognizing more than five decades of service to Boulder Creek, the San Lorenzo Valley and Santa Cruz County.
Known to many as the community’s country doctor, Reed founded the Boulder Creek Medical Clinic in 1961 and built its permanent facility in 1965. He practiced medicine there until his retirement in 1998. Throughout his career, Reed also served as chief of staff at Community Hospital, president of the San Lorenzo Valley Chamber of Commerce, president of the County Medical Society and a delegate to the California Medical Society. He is also an honorary member of the Boulder Creek Volunteer Fire Department.
“It’s quite an honor to be selected, especially since this year is celebrating the 250th anniversary of our country,” said Reed, who was also chosen to be the grand marshal about 20 years ago.

In addition to his local service, Reed was drafted after his second year of college and served two years stateside during the Korean War.
“I was assigned to medical corps even though I had no medical training,” he recalled.
Even after retiring, Reed continued serving others. In 2005, he traveled to Louisiana to provide medical care for victims of Hurricane Katrina.
The holiday festivities begin before the parade with the Boulder Creek Volunteer Fire Department’s annual pancake breakfast, a longstanding community favorite. Proceeds from the breakfast help fund the purchase of medical and rescue equipment used by local firefighters and emergency responders.
Following the parade, the celebration will continue at Junction Park, where the Boulder Creek Recreation and Park District will host its annual town party. Families can enjoy gold panning activities for children, barbecue, beverages, live music and a variety of family-friendly activities throughout the afternoon.
Organizers said the event remains a testament to the strong sense of community that defines Boulder Creek.
“The Fourth of July Parade is one of Boulder Creek’s most cherished traditions,” said Tess Fitzgerald, president of the BCBA. “It’s a wonderful opportunity for neighbors, families, businesses and visitors to come together and celebrate the spirit of our community.”
Motorists should be aware that Highway 9 through downtown Boulder Creek will be closed from 9:30 a.m. until approximately noon on July 4. A detour route will be available, although travelers should expect delays during the event.
Whether attending for the parade, the pancake breakfast or the festivities at Junction Park, organizers are inviting everyone to spend Independence Day celebrating small-town traditions and community pride in Boulder Creek.
