We often hear that multitasking is impossible. Experts tell us our brains are not wired to do several things at once. Then you meet someone like Danielle Ratliff and begin to wonder if she somehow missed the memo.
When I arrived for our conversation, Danielle’s faithful companion, Tucker, a nearly 13-year-old boxer, greeted me from his spot in the office. Tucker has become a part of the daily rhythm of Good Times, where Danielle serves as advertising sales/office manager, operations coordinator, problem solver, community connect and, according to her own description, “a firefighter octopus who wears many hats.”
A Natural Connector
What struck me most during our conversation was not Danielle’s ability to juggle countless responsibilities, but her genuine enthusiasm for people.
That passion appears to have started very early.
As a young child, Danielle was naturally curious and eager to meet people. While her mother balanced a demanding work schedule, Danielle loved exploring her neighborhood, introducing herself to neighbors and striking up conversations. When her family moved, she would often knock on doors to ask if there were children nearby to play with.
The image is both charming and revealing.
Long before networking became a business skill, Danielle was simply interested in people. Today, that same curiosity fuels her work throughout Santa Cruz County.
“I’ve always been a connector. I love helping to bring people together and coffee talk too,” she said.
If you attend networking events throughout the county, you have likely seen Danielle. She seems to be everywhere, building relationships, supporting local businesses, attending community gatherings and helping people discover opportunities they might otherwise miss.
Mastering the Art of Many Roles
Danielle works for the Weeklys, the publishing company behind Good Times, the Press Banner, the Pajaronian and multiple weekly newspapers stretching from Salinas to Santa Rosa. While her official responsibilities focus on Santa Cruz County, her role extends far beyond what most people would imagine.
She thrives on it.
“I feel like an air traffic controller sometimes,” she told me, describing the constant movement and coordinating that fills her day. While many people would find that exhausting, Danielle seems to come alive when everything is moving at once.
Helping Local Businesses Grow
Her work with advertising reflects that same philosophy.
Rather than focusing solely on selling ad space, Danielle enjoys helping small businesses find creative ways to build visibility and grow their brands. She understands that many entrepreneurs operate with limited budgets and need guidance as much as they need advertising.
“I take pride in helping local communities brand themselves and enjoy promoting what they do,” she said.
That commitment to helping others is one reason she has become such a trusted source. Whether she is working with a new business owner, a nonprofit organization or an established company, her goal remains the same: helping people gain exposure, build recognition and strengthen their connection to the community.
She sees newspapers not only as advertising platforms, but as community gathering places where local stories, businesses and people can be seen and celebrated.
The Heart of Community Connection
What makes Danielle special is not simply the number of tasks she handles. It is the energy, heart and authenticity she brings to everything she does.
• Some people manage projects.
• Some people manage systems.
• Danielle manages relationships.
She helps businesses become visible. She helps people connect. She helps communities stay informed. And she does it all with humor, enthusiasm and a genuine desire to see others succeed.
Santa Cruz County has many talented professionals working behind the scenes. Danielle Ratliff is one of those rare individuals whose impact reaches beyond her job title.
She is the familiar face at community events, business mixers, chamber gatherings and celebrations throughout the county. In many ways, she is exactly what she has always been: a curious little girl who enjoys meeting people, learning their stories and discovering how she can help. And our community is better because of it.
