Shout-out: Fire department’s swift response to wildfire is commendable
Scotts Valley Fire Department and CAL Fire, thank you for once again doing an outstanding job saving the properties in our Bethany University neighborhood. The recent fire (on Tuesday Sept. 24) was contained within minutes! I am continually impressed at your professionalism and capabilities. It makes me feel proud and safe to live in this City.

Letter: Build a hotel for the grandkids, not CEOs
Hopefully, our county supervisor, Mark Stone, will not approve the construction of the new La Bahia hotel in Santa Cruz. At least, not as it is presently planned, with its projected height to be four stories and blocking the ocean views of the residents on Beach Hill. The hotel could have been built by now, but the developers will not budge from their insistence that the height be well over zoning regulations. They say that they must have that fourth story for two large and, we must assume, very expensive penthouses. The new La Bahia will not be just a hotel. It will be a four-star hotel. Meaning that it's not going to be a place where the grandkids can stay and be close to the Boardwalk.
Letter: Plea for Bear Creek help
Who exactly do we contact about getting that mess at the base of Bear Creek Road fixed? I have been turning up Bear Creek from Highway 9 nearly daily for more than 23 years now, and the pavement has been terrible at that intersection the whole time. Filling those potholes once in a blue moon with a little Quikcrete, which quickly disappears, is just not working. Please! My little car is very tired of bottoming out there, day after day, week after week.
