Let’s Go Fishin’: Get ready for a spectacular summer fishing season

It seems as though summer has finally kicked in with last weeks unseasonable showers behind us. Summer brings long days and many opportunities to go fishing and enjoy the outdoors. The ocean hosts chances at many types of fish and techniques this time of year. Due to low rainfall many rivers and lakes in the Sierras are also good for fishing right now because they are usually too high with snow melt this time of year.

Healthy living: Healthy frozen summer treats

Summer heat inspires cravings for foods that are cool and refreshing, which too often means sugary popsicles, ice cream, and oversized smoothies. This summer, cool down and stay healthy with homemade, portion-perfect popsicles. Both kids and adults will love these!

The Mountain Gardener: Learn about drought tolerant plants at faire

Without a doubt, the most requested item I'm asked in the design process is to include low water-use plants and garden solutions that are low maintenance. We live in the west where rainfall occurs predominantly from late fall through late spring and the amount and duration vary tremendously. Whether you live in the shade or the sun, it's a smart idea to keep water costs down in the summer and to preserve this natural resource.

Plain talk about food: In search of the perfect muffin

It was in the 1980’s when I discovered a famous Seattle coffee shop’s giant “banana nut muffins.”  Instantly, I became addicted.

Your Health: Staying properly hydrated is key to maintaining health

I’m often asked by patients how much water they need to drink each day. The Institute of Medicine has calculated that men need about 13 cups or three quarts of liquids and women need about nine cups or two quarts of liquids daily. We also ingest approximately 2 ½ cups, or 20 percent of our daily intake of liquids from food, especially fruits and vegetables. In addition, beverages that we commonly drink such as coffee, juice, milk and soda are composed mostly of water.
