The Mountain Gardener: Make blooms and fragrance the hallmark of your garden

Recently I received a bouquet of Stargazer lilies. The spectacular flowers on each stem open in succession and the display will last for nearly two weeks if I take care of them changing the water regularly and re-cutting the stems.

The Mountain Gardener: How to water plants correctly

The recent heat wave was one for the record books. The temps were not the highest we've ever had around here, but as each day melted into the next I kept thinking that fog, nature's air conditioning, was surely on its way. Even drought tolerant plants need a little help at these times.

The Mountain Gardener: Take time to enjoy the garden (and the fair)

I was on my deck recently with a friend who commented that everything smelled so good that it must be nice to just sit and enjoy the garden. I thought to myself "What? Mountain Gardener: Rainy season opens door for erosion-control plants

You know fall is just around the corner when you hear thunder.

Having spent my tender years being shuffled from one aunt’s house to another, I was often found clamming with them on the ocean shore in Westport, Wash., or shaking crab in our family’s cannery on its wharf.
