Cougar softball falls to Carmel
San Lorenzo Valley High School fell to the Carmel Padres 3-2 on April 6, despite allowing just one hit on the day.
The Cougars held the Padres scoreless through the first five innings and with runs in the first and second inning looked like they had the game wrapped up leading 2-0 in the fifth. Late in the game, three costly errors along with a critical double by Carmels’ Nicole Caoli led to three runs and put the Cougars in the losers column for the second time this season. The Padres improved to 10-1 while SLV dropped to 6-2 overall, but 3-0 in league play.
Martial artists compete
Elite Martial Arts Academy in Scotts Valley sent six students to compete in the American Tae Kwon Do Open Tournament in Hayward on March 31.
Alyse Handley received gold in Weapon Forms, gold in Synchronized Forms, silver in Open Forms and bronze in Sparring. Lauren Sibley received gold in Synchronized Forms, silver in Open Forms, bronze in Weapon Forms and bronze in Sparring. Aiden Carney received gold in Open Forms and gold in Weapon Forms. Wheeler Handley received silver in Weapon Forms. Dillon Cambra received silver in Open Forms and bronze in Sparring.
Scotts Valley top Minarets on the diamond
Brenny Hillan went 3-for-3 at the plate and drove in two runs while scoring once himself as the Falcons crushed host Minarets High School of O’Neals 12-1 on April 5.
Sean Varenkamp earned the win on the mound allowing just one hit while striking out two in three innings pitched. Nevada Parsons drove in a run for Scotts Valley on a double during the Falcons seven run second inning.
Cougars win three straight in tourney play
San Lorenzo Valley High School (9-2, 3-1 SCCAL) toppled their first three opponents in the Salinas Easter Tournament, beating host Salinas High 7-2, then crushing King City 11-7 and defeating Greenfield 2-1 on April 6, 7 and 9. The Cougars play Stevenson School in their final game of the tournament on April 12 after press time.
Against Salinas, Tyler Gilbert struck out seven and allowed three hits for the win. Jordan Peabody went 3-3 at the plate with 3 RBI’s and scored once.
Cheerleaders take medals
Scotts Valley residents Juliana Hennig and Colette Menezes – both members of the varsity cheer team at Monte Vista Christian School in Watsonville – helped the squad take first place in their 20-team division at the 2012 United Spirit Association High School Spirit National competition on March 31 and April 1 in Anaheim.
Falcon lacrosse wins again
Collin Corbella led the charge with six goals and two assists as the Falcons escaped with a hard fought 13-11 victory over powerhouse St. Francis of Mountain View on April 6. Wesley Koenig added three goals and four assists and teammate Spencer Fogelquist scored twice with an assist. The Falcons improve their record to 10-1 on the season and play next at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, April 13 at Archbishop Mitty.
